'The Little Mermaid' premieres at BHS
BURLESON – The Burleson High School Fine Arts Department’s production of “The Little Mermaid” began Thurs, Feb. 2.
The play is based on the 1989 American animated musical fantasy film released by Walt Disney Pictures. This film in itself was based on the Danish fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen.
“The Little Mermaid” – which tells the story of a beautiful mermaid princess who dreams of becoming human – was Disney’s 28th animated feature film and was released to theaters on Nov. 17, 1989.
It attracted largely positive reviews.
Frank Conlon, BHS choir director, said the show is very similar to the movie. In the past as many as 900 to 1,200 have attended these performances and he hopes for similar crowds this year.
“There are a few added songs but if they know the movie they’ll recognize a lot of it,” he said. “Some of the characters are more emphasized than others, but its basically the same.”
Conlon said he, Heather Berryhill and Suzanne Robinson worked together closely on direction of the production.
“The music will bring back memories,” he said. “We have some really outstanding performances.”
The Feb. 2-4 performances start at 7 p.m. each night and 2 p.m. on Saturday. It is $8 in advance and $10 at the door.
The cast includes Delaney Wenger as Ariel; Blake Maynard as Prince Eric; Halie Hawkins as Ursula; Sydney Zentell and Hannah Hales as Flotsam and Jetsam; Tanner Gibson as Sebastian; Chris Frazier as King Triton; Zach Watson as Flounder; Noah Luce as Grimsby; and Julia Granger, Jordan Hopkins, Alexia Martin, Shelly Nichols, Janna Perkins and Brea Solis as Mersisters.
