In a time when young girls are beginning to develop self-worth, they are bombarded with a false sense of reality and security, and Crowley Recreation Director Tricia Godwin said they need a myriad of positives influences in their lives.
“They are starting to emerge in their lives and they are starting to look around and see what's been advertised (about women) in magazines and TV,” she said. “It's a time for the mentors to talk to them and encourage them and help them head down the right path.”
Beginning Feb. 13, the rec center is offering a program called “Girls on the Run” for girls in grades 3-5 that will help them use the power of running to prepare them for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living.
“It's amazing to hear some of the testimonials of the girls that have gone through this program,” she said.
The curriculum incorporates training for a 5K with lessons that encourage girls to develop essential life skills. Through activities such as running, playing games and discussing important issues, the girls will experience the joy of being themselves.
“It's amazing how it changes the girls' lives,” she said.
In addition, the girls are empowered with a greater sense of self-awareness, a foundation in team building and a sense of achievement. The lessons are geared to inspire them to be strong, content, and self-confident.
Girls can sign up for the program at the Crowley Recreation Center at the cost of $60. Scholarships may be available for those how can't afford the fee.
The classes, which will be taught by Shelley Ervin and Militza Metz, will be held every Monday and Thursday from 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. beginning Feb. 13 and it will conclude with a 5K in April.
Each lesson will be led by trained coaches who will guide and mentor girls through a fun and uplifting curriculum. Coaches will teach specific life lessons such as dealing with body image and the media, resisting peer pressure, making healthy decisions and contributing to their community.
For more information or to sign up for the program, contact the recreation center at 817-297-2201, Ext 7090.
Volunteers are also needed, and donations are being accepted to help with scholarship opportunities.
