When Molly Pittman attended Townley Elementary School in Irving, her music teacher, Bill Bradley, inspired her to want to become a music teacher.
Now, several years later, she is fulfilling that dream at Dallas Park Elementary.
“He's the reason I wanted to become an elementary school teacher,” she said. “He was very silly and a lot of fun and full of surprises, so we never knew what to expect when we walked in. There was always a mixture of things to do. There was more than just come in, sit down and have a choir lesson. I try to incorporate that with my kids and get them up and moving and have them singing and do it in the fun way.”
Dallas Park principal Michelle McCone is grateful Pittman is part of her staff.
“I see her as a servant leader. She serves children, and she serves our community and our families, and not one time has she complained,” she said.
Last Monday, Pittman was honor by the Crowley ISD as the Heartbeat Team Award recipient for the month of January for her efforts in the classroom.
The Heartbeat Committee received multiple nominations and in them were listed the things she does to go above and beyond: She teaches a “musical math” class to struggling students to help them improve their math skills; Started a Handbell Choir Club; plans, prepares, teaches and presents a themed musical program each month, giving every grade level the opportunity to perform a variety of different musical instruments, songs and dance; Developed “talent time” for fourth graders to perform during lunch; encouraged students to compete in the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra Carol Writing Contest. Two of her students won with her guidance, and promotes CISD's Honor Choir and encourages Dallas Park students to audition.
“I don't like to attract a lot of attention so it was nice to recognized,” she said. “We do a lot of things with music and being in the music department you feel like you get forgotten sometimes, more than the academic classes. It was a nice surprise to see that people do see what we do, and that it is important.”
McCone said Pittman is very worthy of the recognition.
“I couldn't think of anyone else that would be more deserving. I think it's long overdue,” she said. ““Ms. Molly Pittman is a vital part of Dallas Park Elementary. She encourages all students to do their best in their classes as well as their music classes.”
Pittman holds a bachelor's degree in piano performance from Stephen F. Austin University, and a master's degree in music and church music from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth.
“It takes a lot of energy and sometimes I'm exhausted by the end of the day, but I wouldn't have it any other way,” she said. “It's one of those things where you know you're in the right profession if the salary isn't important and that is how I feel about this job. I would do it anyway.”
