Swimming Roundup: North Crowley’s Rakestraw has big night (Posted 2/4/2010 12:22 pm)
North Crowley sophomore Nick Rakestraw made quite an impression Monday night at the District 3-5A swimming and diving championships at the Grapevine-Colleyville Swim Center.

Rakestraw not only won both the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke but also helped the 200 medley relay team to a title and the 200 freestyle relay squad to a third-place finish.

The top six competitors in each advance to the Region I championships Feb. 12-13.

North Crowley’s boys qualified all three relay teams and five individuals in six events.

Rakestraw won the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.38 seconds. He clocked a time of 57.34 to win the 100 backstroke. Kevin Herring was fifth in both the 100 butterfly (1:06.38) and 100 backstroke (1:06.20).

In the 200 medley relay the team of Rakestraw, Christian Quintero, Leif Navarrete and Patrick Dearborn clocked a time of 1:49.75. The Panthers finished third in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:38.37. They were fourth in the 400 freestyle relay after clocking for a time of 3:54.77.

Christian Quintero was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.60) and fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:17.11).

Leif Navarrete placed fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:05.61) and fifth in the 500 freestyle (6:01.44). Brian Quintero placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.68).

North’s Crowley girls squad qualified four relay teams for the regional meet and six swimmers in eight individual events.

The Lady Panthers finished second in the 200 medley relay (2:10.60) and 200 freestyle relay (1:47.67) and fourth in the 400 freestyle relay (4:26.00).

Sophia Kleine led the girls finishing third in the 200 individual medley (2:34:36) and the 100 breaststroke (1:17.14).

Bethany Bonds clocked a time of 1:14.04 to place third in the 110 butterfly. Bonds placed fourth in the 500 freestyle (6:39.36). Lauren Wise was third in the 100 freestyle (1:04.41) and sixth in the 50 freestyle (28.45).

Alex Faulkner placed fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:30.31) and 100 freestyle (1:05.64). Kathleen Ayers finished fourth in the 100 Backstroke (1:19.87) and Taylor Bayless was sixth in the 100 freestyle (1:06.11).
Crowley fares well at district meet

Crowley’s boys and girls swim teams competed Monday at the District 8-4A swimming and diving championships at the Mansfield Natatorium.

The top six competitors advance to the Region I championships Feb. 12-13.

The Eagles qualified two relay teams. The 200 freestyle relay team finished fourth (1:51.81) and the 400 freestyle team was fourth (4:16.22).

Quinn Thompson and David Rhodes each qualified in two events. Thompson placed fourth in the 100 freestyle (56.28) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:08.83). Rhodes finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.73) and sixth in the 500 freestyle (6:16.23).

The Lady Eagles will have two relay teams at regionals. The 200 medley relay placed sixth (2:23.16) and the 400 freestyle was sixth (5:52.66).
